Educational programs:
ACTHA will offer three tracks of educational programming. Attendees are able to select one of three choices for the time periods 8:30 - 9:30 a.m., 11:30 - 12:30 p.m. and 1:30- 2:30 p.m. At 2:30, ACTHA will conduct its annual meeting and at 2:45 there will be an "Ask an Attorney" panel - a terrific way to obtain legal insight into specific issues arising in your associations!
From 8:00 - 11:30 a.m., there is a Trade Show open to the general public at no charge. This is tremendous opportunity for you to bring your bid proposals, get a first impression of companies in attendance, network and enjoy a continental breakfast.
NEW THIS YEAR!!! "Ask the Experts" booths where you can get one-on-one questions answered from professionals in the fields of accounting, banking/lending, insurance, legal and management.
8:30 - 9:30 a.m. (select from one of the three choices below):
- Calling All Newcomers: Learn, Don't Fail: This session will cover governing documents related to dondominium, townhouse, homeowner and master associations focused on fiduciary duty; decision making and organizational and operational basics. Just elected to your Board? This will help you hit the ground running. Presenter: Charles T. VanderVennet of the Law Offices of Charles T. VanderVennet
- Elections: Who are the Keepers: This session provides knowledge on following the law with the correct procedures to ensure a legitimate election and board. Topics include recent changes in law, notice, proxies or mail in ballots, who prepares proxies, nominations and introduction of candidates, voting and tallying results. Also learn who is eligbile to serve and to vote. Presenters: Ryan Sphritz of Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit and Keith Hales of Hales Property Management, Inc.
- (CICA) Common Interest Community Associations - Non-Condo: For those who don't live in condo associations, your prayer has been answered. You now have a source to look to for answers on how to administer your townhome or homeowner association. Presenter: Douglas Sury of Keay & Costello
11:30 – 12:30 p.m. (select from one of three choices below):
- Reserve Studies: The Best Tool for Preparation: A light bulb just went off in your head and you are thinking "Oh, that's what it's for." A reserve study is highly recommended and needs to be updated periodically to help you plan for the future of your association This is your road map on how to spend you assessments to comply with your fiduciary duty in properly maintaining the property. Presenters: Dan Haumann of Advocate Property Management
- Your Team/Partners: An Important Ingredient: (Part 1) This will cover the importance of selecting the profesisonal who will be on your side (i.e. your manager, attorney, accountant, etc,) Also included will be a discussion on the relationship between the board, owners and the professional partners. Plan a board orientation to acquaint all board members on the protocols. Presenters: Sima Kirsch of the Law Offices of Sima L. Kirsch and Tom Skweres of Wolin-Levin, Moderator: Mike Devlin of Caruso Management Group and Board Member of his own Association
- Sustainable Landscaping: What's That?: Briefly, it's good to be Green. This session will provide concepts and cost saving techniques you can put into action now and in the near future to benefit your associaton and your environment. These ideas will be cost effective and provide relief for your stretched budgets. Presenters: Tom Hable of Rowell Management
1:30 - 2:30 p.m. (select from one of three choices below):
- Legislative Update: How Does it Affect my Association: Many bills have been prposed in Springfield and other governmental bodies and some are welcome and others should be avoided. This session will explain what the proposals entail, which ones have or may pass, which are on hold, and which will fade away. You may think it's alphabet soup, but many will definitely affect you and your association. Panelists: Angela Falzone of Association Advocates, Inc and advisory member to the Manager Licensing Board, Michael Kim of Michael Kim and Associates
- Board Diagnosis: Productive or Dysfunctional: (Part 2) Learn how recognizing the chain of command and understanding officer and director duties can impact the ability of your board to functino well and avoid the usual pitfalls. Presenter: Christine Evans of Vanguard Community Management Moderator: Mike Devlin of Caruso Management Group and Board Member of his own Association
- Rentals: Yesterday's Enemy/Today's Friend: Historically associations amended documents or passed rules to restrict rentals believing it would provide a better community. With the effect of high delinquencies due to foreclosures in associations, many have loosened their restrictions and also become landlords. This session will cover the pros and cons and give you questions to consider to determine what's best for your association. Presenters: Sarah Gullett-Johnson of SGJ Realty and Management and Jim Slowikowski of Dickler Kahn Slowikowsi & Zavell, Ltd.
2:45 - 3:30 p.m. ASK AN ATTORNEY!!! Get your question asked and answered! A panel of legal experts will respond. Moderator: Charles T. VanderVennet of the Law Offices of Charles VanderVennet, Panelists: Stuart Fullett of Fullett Rosenlund Anderson, PC and Dawn Moody of Keough and Moody
General conference information:
- Registration opens at 8 a.m. (Note: There is an additional charge of $20 per person if registering at the door)
- Online registration will be open until noon on Wednesday, April 18 after which time registration must be done on the day of the event
- ACTHA Member Registration: $45 per person or $40 per person if sending three or more from the same association
- Non-member Registration: $120 per person;
- Parking is free and the location convenient! The Drury Lane is located right off I-88 or Roosevelt Road.
Exhibitors
There will be a trade show from 8:00 – 11:30 a.m. open to the General Public at no charge. A great way to meet pros in a variety of disciplines and network with them and your peers! Exhibitors will be posted beginning February 1.
